It still is a conscious effort not to draw and instead paint.  I feel closer everytime I work in Photoshop and I love that feeling.  Having to tear myself away, because I just want to keep adding, touching it up, creating.

I must have patience.
I must use my time wisely.
I must paint.

P.S. – I didn’t realize how jarring that canvas flip would be when I saved it, in hindsight I should have flipped it back beforehand.  But it is super helpful for picking up errors and weird anomalies your eyes don’t see.

The Journey

Love Life

I swear there’s just not enough time in the day.
Today was crazy, exciting, fun, and filled with smiles.  Managed to squeeze this out before it was over.

Another early day tomorrow, so I gotta run.

More experimentation with the Impasto Brushes from  I used them the other day when I did the old man portrait, turning the Opacity down and gently brushing on texture.  I keep finding new ways to use them and each brush has it’s own personality, it is fun to see what I can do with them.

I still have a free set of Impasto Brushes to give away courtesy of Nicolai from GrutBrushes.  To get them, be the first to send me an email to with the subject line “Free Impasto Brushes” and I’ll send you the instructions.

Gotta get up early tomorrow and get the engines running
Another journey begins.

Old ManMan

Been spending the last couple days studying and learning how to draw in a manga style.  It has been extremely frustrating and at times felt like banging my head into a wall.  So, much so I had to give myself a break and do a portrait, less I go crazy in my effort.

I’ll be going back to banging my head against a wall tomorrow, keep me in your thoughts.

Like Building a Sandcastle?

Well that was fun.
I’m glad I decided to add something more to this image in an attempt to make it my own.
Although, I feel like there should be a waterfall in there somewhere.  I’ll definitely have to revisit this (at least I’ll put it on the list with all the other half finished pieces awaiting further attention lol).

Until then.
The journey continues…

I Think I’m In Love

Janice Knows
Janice Knows
I’ve only had these brushes for a couple of days, but already I’m in love.

Some of your might remember about a month ago me posting  a link to the GrutBrushes website, telling you about the free brush sampler set and the free brush of the week downloads.  Well the other day Nicolai from GrutBrushes stopped by the blog and he was generous enough to offer me the whole Impasto brush set for free.  :D

As you can imagine for someone who’s always experimenting with Photoshop and snatching up new brushes from the Internetz, I am super happy! I wanted to once again thank him for being so gracious and also for what I can only imagine is a lot of hard work and effort that he puts into making these brushes.

Thank You
I <3 these brushes.

Experimenting with the new Impasto brushes

I’ve downloaded my fair share of free Photoshop brushes off of Google searches trying to find brushes that offer that painterly feel of brush on canvas and honestly it’s a real hit or miss.  You hardly ever really know what you’re getting or how the brushes will paint off of just the little thumbnail images.  But that was one of the cool things I liked about GrutBrushes, the website actually has video and picture examples of how the brush strokes look and actually shows you examples of artwork that used the brushes to create them.

It completely removes the guess work from the process and allows you to actually choose the type of brush you’re really looking for.  Not to mention Nicolai is awesome enough to drop a free brush every week.  If you haven’t checked out GrutBrushes already, I highly recommend it!

These Impasto brushes are so jam packed full of texture and each one delivers something unique.  Some are rich with layers of texture, others are softer and offer a much smoother stroke

The other day, I had one of my most successful days on this blog; I hit a couple milestones for likes and views and then later I realized I had just reached over two and a half years on WordPress.  *Excited Face*  It was overwhelming thinking about how much I’ve accomplished, all the cool people I’ve met, all the inspiration, my personal growth during this journey as an artist, and all the ups and downs over the years.

This whole blog started from a prompt in one of my web design classes in December 2013 and it’s cool to look back over the years and see how much everything has grown since then.  I’ve been super nostalgic over the last couple days and it’s caused me to think about where I want to steer my artistic journey in the coming years.

This post has already got a bit long winded, so I won’t overload you with anymore late night ramblings, just know over the next six months I’ll probably be dropping some hints, adjusting schedules and making some tweeks and changes.  This is going to be fun.

If you’ve made it this far, first of all thanks for reading and secondly you’re totally in luck.
Nicolai hooked me up with another free Impasto Brush set for me to give away to one lucky follower.  If you’d like it, be the first to send me an email to, with the subject line “Free Impasto Brush Set” and I’ll get you that set right away.

Again, a big THANK YOU goes out to Nicolai for being so generous and also for all the work he’s put into these brushes, they really are high quality and I appreciate all the time and effort he’s put into creating them.  Top notch stuff.

Until Next Time

Late Night, Eyes Won’t Close

Painting when I paint.
No sleep, no need, no pain.
Don’t wait, just paint.

It’s interesting how much more I’ve learned once I started paying less attention to creating an exact reproduction of the reference material and just worked toward capturing the essence of the initial image.

Feels like I’ve given myself permission to freely experiment, to make mistakes and learn from them.

I had a ton of fun playing with textures and irregular colors.  Mostly used a dry brush with a decent stiffness to it and added textures with a couple painterly brushes (mostly my impasto brush).
Only cost me staying up an hour and a half later than I was suppose to to accomplish this.  XD

I see a path
This is the journey

“We can complain because rose bushes have thorns, or rejoice because thorn bushes have roses.” – Abraham Lincoln

Female Guardian/Champion

Although, both Guardians and Champions can have very similar looks, I think I’ll distinguish them by offensive/defensive weapons, armor, clothing, personality.  Guardians will be more like tanks, able to absorb damage away from other characters, so they’ll need heavier armor, shields, etc.  and once I get to the posing stage should have a more defensive pose.

Champions on the other hand will be more about the ability to attack while also taking damage.  So, lighter armor and medium to fast mobility.  Also, they’re poses should be more aggressive, open, forward, or show movement.
